The newer members of Irish society are willing and able to do their share. That was the message that came from key workers from a number of local agencies as they paid a visit to DundalkFM studios to chat about their experiences with immigrants and refugees.
“We’re all working with people who have arrived from other countries,” said Declan Cassidy of EurAV, and there is a great sense of collaboration in the Louth and Meath areas. Louth Local Devlopment, Louth County Council’s Integration Team and Volunteer Louth all do so much good work in this area, and it was great to join them on the programme to talk about that work. We’re all experiencing the a similar sense that those newer members of our society are keen to get involved at community level, to integrate and to contribute.”
The interaction between the various agencies and organisations is working well, according to Declan.
“We’ve had various projects to do with training or media creation that are aimed at immigrants,” he explained, “and the other organisations have been able to help us find suitable people to take part. We’re also having really skilled people offer to volunteer because their qualifications aren’t recognised in this country, so they’re having difficulties getting work, but want to keep busy and useful.”
