If you’ve ever wanted to make TikToks that stand out, produce a short film, or create a programme for community television, this autumn in Drogheda you can learn how — for free. A new hands-on training course will take participants from first idea to finished project, with guidance from Oscar-qualified film maker Declan Cassidy.
Developed by local non-profit community media organisation EurAV with funding from Coimisiún na Meán, the course will run twice — once in September and again in October 2025 — with only ten places available on each round.
Over five workshops, participants will explore concept development, interviewing techniques, camera, sound, and lighting skills, as well as editing and distribution. From the outset, each person will work on their own project, which will be completed and ready for screening by the final session.
The course is open to all ages and backgrounds. All that’s required is access to a camera — even a smartphone will do — and an interest in telling stories. Professional media equipment will also be available for use during the training.
EurAV hopes some graduates will go on to contribute content to its forthcoming online community media platform, but there’s no obligation to do so. “This is about giving people the skills and confidence to create,” says Cassidy. “Whether that’s for social media, community groups, or personal projects, the important thing is enabling local voices to be heard.”
